Mission
Learning
Center has played a
vital role in my life
and contributed to
my lifelong love of
reading. Reading has
opened a whole new
world for me by
expanding my ability
to learn, pushing me
to think critically,
and unlimiting my
dreams. Reading
makes everything
possible and for me
it began at the
Mission Learning Center.

Mission Learning Center champions childhood literacy as a vehicle to
promote a life-long passion for learning, encourage family engagement,
and provide children with the means to attain a higher quality of life.
Since 1972, Mission Learning
Center has taught thousands of San Francisco school children how
to read.
Our reading programs show
measurable results: children advance on average two grade levels
in their reading ability in just seven months.
And recognizing that parents
are their children’s first and most important teachers, we added
parent empowerment programs in 1986. Parents learn strategies for
creating strong families and communities—environments in which children
will thrive.
Dia de los Ninos, San
Francisco’s annual celebration of reading, was started by Mission
Learning center in 1998. In the past six years, thousands of children
and their parents have experienced the power and enjoyment of literacy
through this unique citywide event.
All Mission Learning Center
programsfor children, their parents, and the communityspring
from the widely acknowledged fact that literacy is a key component
in escaping poverty and living a fully realized life.
