Mission Learning Center supports children (K 5), primarily those from low-income homes who are reading below grade level, in becoming skilled and engaged learners. Our programs intervene by providing additional, intensive reading support for children who are behind in reading and attend under-served schools. Specifically, we provide research-based, outcome-driven programming that provides authentic opportunities for children to engage with literature as well as practice basic reading and writing skills. By providing out-of-school support in elementary school, we narrow the achievement gap.
MLC was founded in 1972, and was formerly the Mission Reading Clinic. The agency grew from an organizing effort of the Mission Coalition Organization to support Lyndon Johnsons Model Cities program. In mid-2011, we merged with Reading Partners, a national literacy non-profit, and we are working together to make both of our programs even stronger.
